Explore Heritage and Scenic Trails at Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades, CA

Nestled in the hills of Pacific Palisades, CA, Will Rogers State Historic Park offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and recreational charm. Once the private ranch of legendary entertainer and social commentator Will Rogers, this preserved site now welcomes visitors to experience a piece of California’s cultural past surrounded by picturesque landscapes.

The Life and Legacy of Will Rogers

Will Rogers—actor, writer, and beloved American humorist—purchased this land in the 1920s as his family retreat. Over the years, his estate expanded to encompass up to 359 acres of coastal ridgelines, with a 31-room ranch house at its center. Designed in Spanish Colonial Revival style, the home included numerous fireplaces, bathrooms, and even a polo field, stables, golf course, and roping arena.

Following his death, Rogers’s widow, Betty, donated the property to the state in 1944, ensuring the preservation of his legacy. Today, weekend visitors can take docent-led tours of the historic home, which features original furnishings, family heirlooms, photos, and personal memorabilia that give insight into Rogers’s off-screen life and character.

Outdoor Adventure With a Historical Backdrop

The park’s scenic setting in the Santa Monica Mountains offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities. The Inspiration Point Loop is a favorite trail, offering moderate hiking and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding valleys. For more seasoned hikers, the park connects to the extensive Backbone Trail system.

Equestrian culture remains a major element of the park. Riders can enjoy horseback excursions through the same trails once ridden by Rogers himself. Seasonal polo matches and riding lessons are also part of the experience, honoring the ranch’s original equestrian spirit.

The visitor center provides trail maps and informative exhibits about local wildlife, the environment, and Rogers’s contributions to American culture.

A Space for Reflection, Community, and Resilience

Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the park features picnic areas, a children’s playground, restrooms, water stations, parking, and EV charging. Community events, educational programs, and riding clinics reinforce its role as a treasured gathering place.

In January 2025, the historic ranch house suffered significant damage in a wildfire, with only two chimneys left standing. Fortunately, many valuable artifacts were saved, and restoration efforts are already in motion—highlighting the park’s enduring significance and the deep community support behind it.

Will Rogers State Historic Park invites visitors to step into the story of an American icon, while enjoying peaceful trails, engaging activities, and the powerful spirit of preservation and resilience that defines this Pacific Palisades landmark.
